Original tenement buildings were designed with minimal bathroom spaces — typically a small room containing only a toilet and a tub, with no dedicated shower and barely enough floor space to turn around. When these buildings were converted to high-end condos, the expectation of buyers was a modern, well-appointed bathroom — which means that plumbers working in North End condo renovation projects must solve the engineering challenges of creating modern, full-function bathrooms within spaces that were never designed for that purpose. This is challenging, creative work, and it is work that our team does well.

Shower Installation in Tenement Buildings

Adding a shower to an original North End tenement bathroom that previously had only a tub requires routing new pressure-balanced shower valve supply connections through tight wall cavities, installing a properly waterproofed shower deck or tray within the existing floor structure, and creating a code-compliant drain connection with proper slope that can be achieved without excessive floor structure disruption. In buildings where the floor structure between a North End condo and the unit below is an original 2x8 or 2x10 joist system with minimal depth, creating adequate drain slope for a new shower floor drain while maintaining acceptable structural clearance is a genuine engineering challenge. Bathroom Drain and Supply Maintenance
