Lead service pipe replacement, BWSC water main connections, and water service repairs for the North End's pre-war residential and commercial buildings. Full permit management included.
Call (888) 861-3658The North End's pre-war housing stock — the tenement buildings on Salem Street, Prince Street, and throughout the neighborhood that date from the 1860s-1920s — represents one of the highest concentrations of potentially lead-service-piped properties in Boston. These buildings were connected to the city water system during an era when lead was the standard service pipe material, and a significant percentage of them have never had their original lead connections replaced. For the North End's condo owners, many of whom have invested substantially in renovating their units while the buildings' external infrastructure remains in its original condition, lead service pipe replacement is often the most impactful water quality investment available.
We perform lead service pipe replacement as a complete managed project — from initial BWSC permit application through final BWSC inspection sign-off. The work involves: locating and exposing the existing lead service pipe at the curb stop valve in the sidewalk; verifying the material of the connection at the city main corporation stop; installing new 1-inch Type K copper service pipe from the curb stop to the building foundation entry point; restoring the sidewalk excavation; and completing the BWSC-required inspection of the new service connection before backfill. In the North End, where excavation must be managed carefully on narrow sidewalks that serve pedestrian-heavy commercial streets, we conduct all sidewalk work with proper safety barriers, maintain building access for residents and businesses throughout the work period, and restore brick sidewalk surfaces to their original condition using matching brick and mortar specifications.
Water service line leaks between the city main and the building foundation can manifest as unexplained water pressure drops throughout the building, water appearing in the cellar or basement at the service entry point, or BWSC notification of a high water consumption alert based on meter readings. We diagnose water service line leaks through systematic pressure testing and, where necessary, ground-penetrating investigations to locate the leak point before any excavation begins. Service line repairs are completed under BWSC permit with required inspector sign-off before backfill.
Commercial buildings and mixed-use properties in the North End and Waterfront district are required by BWSC regulations to have approved backflow prevention devices on their water service connections to protect the public water supply from potential cross-connection contamination. We install, test, and maintain BWSC-approved reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) and double check valve (DCV) backflow prevention assemblies for commercial North End properties, providing the annual test reports that BWSC requires for all registered backflow prevention devices.
